Leasehold enfranchisement is the process you go through to either extend your lease, or purchase a share of the freehold (collective enfranchisement). On the other hand, if you own the freehold, you do not have to go through any such process – you own the building and the land outright

The Leasehold Reform Act 1967 gives leaseholders of houses a right to acquire the freehold of their house or extend their lease. The Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 allows leaseholders of flats either to collectively acquire their freehold or to extend their lease.
